I am the bread of life

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry” John 6:35

People hunger for many things in this life. They think that accomplishments, flashy cars, clothes, fame, experiences or sex will fill them up. But after a while they get hungry again. In fact, their hunger grows and they find that what satisfied them before no longer does.

Jesus says that He is the spiritual food for the whole of person’s life. On the cross, Jesus died and told us to take bread and wine to remind ourselves that He alone can completely satisfy a human life.

I am the vine, you are the branches

“I am the vine you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit” John 15:5

God wants us to have fruitful lives. We are branches, and God desires that we produce the fruit of good character. Who we are in our inner lives will shape our responses to the ups and downs of life.

Our fruitfulness is so important that He will prune our lives (which can be painful). But as any gardener will tell you, it is only when you cut back that you see a new season of fruit.

I am the way, the truth and the life

“I am the way, the truth and the life.” John 14:6

Jesus told His disciples that He was leaving. They were confused and distressed because they wanted to go with Him. But Jesus had to go. It was only by dying on the cross, rising again and ascending to heaven that He could become ‘the way’.

His life was sacrificed so that we could be saved; His perfect obedience became ours and our sin became His; we have new life because He rose victorious over the grave. He has gone before us and will welcome us to heaven one day!

I am the light of the world

“I am the light of the world” John 8:12

The Old Testament says, “The Lord is my light” (Psalm 27:1) and “the Lord will be your everlasting light” (Isaiah 60:20). With these words, Jesus claimed to be God in the flesh. He was fully human but at the same time fully God.

As God He shines His light (i.e. truth) into every part of our lives. There is no hiding or escaping. When we line up our lives with His truth it brings freedom and fullness. As a man He knows we need grace and so His forgiveness flows to us each day.
