Guide me God!

Here’s a great psalm-prayer to hang on to this week – no matter what lies ahead: exams, studying, hectic amounts of work, decisions about the future, or new adventures. Here’s a picture of the kind of God who will be with us:

‘The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honour to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me…’

Called to be a student?

Here’s some good news for when you’re studying and writing exams: by doing this you are right in the middle of God’s will for your life. God has called you right now to be a student – and to do that as well as you can. By studying you are honouring God and you can totally invite God’s presence into your work space

Here’s part of a really cool ‘exam-prayer’ from long ago:
‘Lord – give me sharpness of mind, capacity to remember, skill in learning, subtlety to interpret, and eloquence in speech’ It’s a prayer God will honour as you study and write this weekend

Why exams God?

Why exams God? It seems like a whole lot of pressure and work to show what I don’t know. I suppose it is hard to see what I really know without being tested? Holy Spirit, help me to have the point of view in life that whatever hard stuff comes up (whether it is exams, relationship, family or whatever) it is a chance to see what I really know or believe in my heart about life, myself and you, God. All I need to remember is that you, God, will never let me down; you’ll never let me be pushed past my limit; you’ll always be there to help me come through it.

Reading both God-books

Where’s God when you’re studying bio, history, maths, art,[…] ? Does the work sometimes seem a bit pointless? How about seeing it this way:

‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
…their voice goes out into all the earth…’ (Psalm 19v1&4

God has given us a book – the Bible – to know God better, but God has written another ‘book’ – the whole creation: everything that exists, everything that humans have done in history either show us something about God or the Story God is writing.

Ask God to open your eyes to that other ‘book’ as you study – I think you’ll find God has been there all along.
