Forgiveness – How Much Is Too Much?

Can I get away with forgiveness as a once-off thing?

‘Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’ (Matthew 18vs21-22)

This does not mean that when someone hurts me I keep count until the seventy-eighth time and then smack them on the head! The principle Jesus is describing is that in the kingdom of God, forgiveness looks ridiculous.

There is no end to it.

Is there anyone you need to forgive again, again?

Matthew 18 here:

Ever been denied something because of who you are? Been told you can’t do something because you’re… a guy, a girl, too dark or light, too wealthy, too poor ? This week thousands of women in Saudi Arabia protested over a ban against women-drivers in their kingdom. In SA University of Cape Town’s race-based admissions policy is hotly debated.

Praise God it’s not like that in Jesus’ kingdom!: ‘There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus…'(Galatians 3v28) Who can you invite into the kingdom this week? How could you step into your ‘one-ness’ with other Christians?

Galatians 3 here:

Do you sometimes find yourself doing things just to get accepted by the people around you – things you’re later a bit ashamed of? Ever wondered why?

Imagine these three things were really real for you: 1) you are someone whom Jesus chooses to live inside by his Spirit 2) Jesus living inside you makes you part of God’s Kingdom 3) no matter how badly things are going around you, God’s Kingdom is not in trouble. So ultimately YOU’RE not in trouble either.

Next time you’re tempted to do something to win the approval of people around you – ask the Spirit to remind you who you really are. It might make all the difference
