God’s Image Bearers – Out True Identity

Do you know who you are – really?

One of the highlights in the creation story in Genesis is what it says about who we are – made by God, male and female, in God’s image.

Being a teenager is a lot about discovering who you are. At the most basic level – truth is … you’re someone who bears the image of the Creator of the Universe. That’s actually pretty amazing.

How much of the temptation to gossip about others, or to lie about ourselves or hide behind the masks we create is because we’re insecure, because we’ve lost that core sense of who we are?

Ask God to remind you of your true identity today?

Read the story in Genesis 1v26-31 here:

Do you often feel left out because you not like mr or miss popular, or that no one sees you for who you are? Does that make you want to change yourself into the person you feel is ‘popular’?
Don’t fall into that trap. Romans 12v3-8 says this: ‘In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.’
See, we are all meant to do God’s work in our own way. In a puzzle no two pieces will ever be the same! And there’s no special place for the most ‘popular’ piece. Be the piece that you are and you will fit in.

Romans 12 here:

What are your eyes fixed on?

How are you feeling as you get ready for today? Are you thinking of the things you’re struggling with: conflicts you’re caught in, the test you haven’t really studied for, the habits you’re definitely going to avoid today? Or are you focusing on something better?

Someone once said to me we tend to move towards the things our eyes are focused on. Is that true for you? What if you fixed your eyes on what is unseen, the hope to which Jesus has called you, the fearfully and wonderfully made person you are, and on Jesus himself who is God’s great YES to us?

Great verse on that in Ephesians 1v18:

Initiated or Baptised?

Where do we as ‘Jesus-friends’ get our identity and values from?
Our friends? Our family? Our music? Our culture? Our language? Our faith?

27 young men died tragically this week in cultural initiation ceremonies in Mpumalanga. Parliament is debating the issue of cultural practices today. Being a Christ follower is not always easy you may have noticed?

Sometimes there are moments when our friends/family/music/culture has values that are different from those Jesus encourages us to follow:

Western Materialism vs Generosity?
Male dominance vs Equality?
Ancestors vs One High Priest?

Read Galatians #v27-29 here:

Jesus, help us to identify which values align with how you lived and to leave behind the values which don’t.
